THE AMBIGUITY OF WORKING-CLASS WOMAN

Well, most women worldwide fight the confusion between being a perfect homemaker and making an ideal career. We have the term women empowerment to educate, provide opportunities, and make this world a better place for any girl with dreams.

We feel acknowledged and happy when we see success stories of women's leadership. But, that’s a different realm; beneath this pioneer, strong, confident set of women paving their way in the world is another subtle realm of women who have no choice. No choice but to work. Not to make a career, to sustain a living. Well, here comes the ambiguity.

We always get to read fancy quotes on Women’s day with powerful adjectives associated with women. Women are capable of handling workplace frustration, child tantrums, taunts from in-laws, lots of support from society on a few special days of the year. Working women are indeed marvelous. They have to be. They have no choice.

Most women work because they have to, not because they have a supportive husband, encouraging in-laws, and passion for careers. They work to sustain a living and pay for their child’s education. Most women don’t have the privilege to be financially independent while working.

I feel furious when my people say, “ Practically speaking, you girls can find a job or get married; you have a choice, but boys don’t have that privilege.”

This is a disproportionate society, and we have passionate women with groundbreaking ideas that can change the world and women who want to cook and raise their kids. Sadly, both these categories work, one fighting for an opportunity and one fighting for a living.

Who has the choice?
